My Morning Paper – April 29, 2017 – Non-Issues and Foolishness

“AG dismisses revelations as ‘foolishness” The Nassau Guardian

Excerpt from this article; “With two PLP Cabinets minister facing explosive revelations surrounding their conduct, Attorney General Allyson Maynard-Gibson indicated that the party’s opponents are attempting to distract the PLP on the ‘finish line’, calling the matters ‘foolishness’.

‘We have just come from the IAAF [World] Relays where when any of our wonderful athletes, when any of them were at the finish line, the opponents tired to distract them,’ she said when asked whether she believes her Cabinet colleagues erred.’

‘We are staying focused.  MY colleagues are staying focused.’

On May 3 and May 10 the record of the Progressive Liberal Party in changing fundamentally this country – I mentioned some of those things today – for the benefit of the Bahamian people stands for itself.

‘And very importantly Bahamian recognize how Bahamian lives have been changed, whether it is Baha Mar, National Health Insurance (NHI), Swift Justice, the FIR (Flight information region); they are all changing the Bahamas and Bahamian lives.’

‘That record speaks for itself.”

This past week saw Education Minister, Jerome Fitzgerald being exposed in violating the Manual of Cabinet and Ministry Procedure with him soliciting contracts on behalf of his father’s company for three very lucrative contracts in trucking, brokerage and limestone services; these violations have been labeled as ‘non-issues’ by the Chairman of the Progressive Liberal Party, Bradley Roberts and are now being dismissed as ‘foolishness’ by the Attorney General herself.

This past week saw the revelation of over $94,000 being paid to a U.S. bank account for Minister of Labour Shane Gibson between August 2011 and January 2013.  This money, claims Minister Gibson, was used toward his 2012 election campaign and toward initiatives in the Golden Gates constituency, such as scholarships but Minister Gibson has refused to answer as to why they campaign contributions and constituency allowances were being made to a U.S. account and not a local account but yet these matters have been labeled as ‘non-issues- and ‘foolishness’.

This reeks of the sheer arrogance of the present Progressive Liberal Party government, who have now seem to taken the stance that no matter what wrongs they do, it does not matter because the rules and laws do not apply to them.

Indeed this is a level of arrogance that has not been seen before in the history of the Bahamas among its elected officials; we cannot continue down this ‘dark path’.

To be this dismissive of such blatant wrong-dong among the ranks of your parliamentary colleagues and then speak to your success in ‘Swift Justice’ is hypocrisy at his highest.

The Progressive Liberal Party fails for one reason, it is their nature.
