My Morning Paper – March 20, 2018 – Defying Logic and Commonsense

The chairman of the Progressive Liberal Party (PLP), Senator Fred Mitchell now questions Prime Minister Hubert Minnis in “having a hand” in arranging for a magistrate to fly to Inagua to process a group of migrants that were apprehended there last week; while he concedes the fact that he does not know if this action was instructed by the Attorney General, Carl Bethel himself; this does not stop him from seeking to ‘muddy’ the water with the intimation of the interference of the separate branches of government, in this case The Executive possibly interfering with The Judiciary.  Even as Senator Mitchell questions the prime minister possibly subverting the laws of the country he then goes on to suggest that the country does not have to adhere to same said laws.

“Mitchell: PM Owes explanation for sending magistrate to Inagua” – The Nassau Guardian

Excerpt from this article; “Opposition Spokesman on Immigration Fred Mitchell yesterday insisted it is not necessary in law for undocumented migrants to go before a magistrate. And said it would result in a nightmare for the judiciary and the prison system.

Mitchell also demanded an explanation from Prime Minister Dr. Hubert Minnis on whether he ‘had a role in ordering a magistrate to fly to Inagua’ after a group of migrants were apprehended last week.

Certainly, the prime minister has no legal role in directing magistrates.  This is a role for the chief justice.  The attorney general, as the minister for the administration of justice, would be the one to arrange with the judiciary,’ said Mitchell chairman of the Progressive Liberal Party (PLP).

He added, ‘There is nothing unprecedented about magistrates finding illegal migrants guilty and then dispatching them off to their home country.  This was done before.

The practice stopped because it simply was not necessary in law and could result in a nightmare for the judiciary and the prison system.”

Surely the chairman of the Progressive Liberal Party (PLP) realizes that the notion of not sending undocumented migrants to go before a magistrate is the entire problem with the Rony-Jean Charles situation and only provides more fertile  grounds for persons such as Attorney Fred Smith to continue to erode the sovereignty of The Bahamas and to continue to overrule the spirit of it’s constitution

Is Senator Fred Mitchell, then suggesting that he would continue with that practice, in light of the glaring need for the reform of some of our immigration laws?  This defies logic and commonsense in a progressive society, which has been clearly proven recently, even the ‘dumb’ would know better than this.

Maybe, just maybe before he attempts to ‘attack’ anyone over anything Senator Mitchell should go out and ascertain the facts to back up his accusations; but then he would not be “Fred Mitchell”, now would he?

The Progressive Liberal Party continues to fail for one reason, it is within their nature.
