“Davis insists BPL consumers suffering for govts. mistakes” – The Nassau Guardian

Excerpt from this article; “Opposition Leader Philip Brave Davis yesterday said the Minnis administration is exacting a price on the Bahamian people for the error and mistakes in government’.

Last week, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance Peter Turnquest advised that the government will have to raise taxes if Bahamas Power and Light (BPL) does not increase light bills.

‘The Bahamian people ought not to be paying for [the governments] mistakes at all,’ Davis said.

‘They are the ones that have created this mess at BPL; BPL was on the path of recovery and providing sustainable, reliable and afforded electricity.”

It would appear to me that each and every time the leader of the opposition Progressive Liberal Party (PLP) opens his mouth on issues such as these, he only shows how incompetent he was as Deputy Prime Minister and as the Minister of Public works, the government ministry under which Bahamas Power and Light (BPL) falls.

To listen to Mr. Davis’s narrative; “BPL was on the path of recovery and providing sustainable, reliable and affordable electricity”, this is like Mr. Davis saying that load shedding only occurs when the Free National Movement (FNM) is the government and it is ludicrous because unfortunately he [Mr. Davis] cannot give any evidence of what they are saying beside asking us to take him at his word – right.

What is unfortunate here is that the present Progressive Liberal Party (PLP) organization would like for you to believe that all of the woes that have befallen Bahamas Power and Light have only happened within the past three years or so and that they had nothing to do with the problems that the cooperation’s face today; we all know better than this and my question is this is how Mr. Davis’ wishes to drive his bid to be prime minister by misleading the public?

The truth about BPL is the successive governments, this includes all PLP governments [talks and plans of FREE electricity], have been delinquent in keeping the technology of our power company up to date and keeping the equipment properly maintained.  

Another truth is that Mr. Brave Davis who now seeks to points fingers on this issue now seeks to say that he may had not done anything to alleviate the problem but it was “planned”, why is it always ‘planned’?

The long and short of it all is simply this; unless/until the Progressive Liberal Party (PLP) can admit to its role in bringing the power company to this present state of affairs and continues to blame the present government of all of the power company’s woes; they cannot and should not be trusted to run the country.

This is like them are trying to convince the Bahamian people that all their economic dealings were above board and none led to the five downgrades that the country experienced in the last five years that the PLP governed.

As they prop up their party with a new, new, new [new] leader in the Hon. Philip ‘Brave’ Davis; wasn’t he there when all went off course during the last PLP administration?

They should not be trusted.

The PLP fails for one reason, it is their nature.

“2017 General Election process ‘corrupted” – EyeWitness News

Excerpt from this article; “NASSAU, BAHAMAS – Former House Speaker Dr. Kendal Major has called into question the voter turnout of the 2017 General Election, claiming he has ‘credible evidence’ people were paid to stay home.

Major called the electoral process ‘corrupted’ during a Progressive Young Liberals youth meeting on Friday.

He was responding to a question on the decline in voter turnout over the past three elections.

‘I have credible evidence that persons were paid to stay home and so what has happened in our elections is it has been corrupted, truly corrupted,’ Major said.

‘And I am not saying this to point a finger, I am saying the process has been corrupted.  And one of the things the PLP outh to do is legislate campaign finance reform, in the first order, at the first opportunity.”

This seems to verify my point which I always make as it pertains to the Progressive Liberal Party (PLP), which is ‘there is PLP fact and then there is reality, the two cannot be assimilated.’  Here PLP facts state that the only logical reason for them to have lost the last election is/was because ‘someone’ paid people to stay away from the polls; whiles reality shows that with each election voter numbers have been falling off.

“According to statistics from, the Parliamentary Registration Department (PRD), 88 percent of the 181,000 registered voters in The Bahamas cast ballots during the General Elections compared to the 90 percent voter turnout in 2012 elections and the 92 percent turnout during the 2007 elections.”

This statistical evidence shows a downward trend in voter turnout and registration but to attribute it to people being paid to stay away from the polls and not voter frustration to explain the PLP lost is PLP logic, which does not align with realty and logic.

I mean, if you are paying, why not just pay the people to vote for you?

The truth of the matter is this, people are becoming tired of the electoral system and as they would put it, “they keep getting the same thing”.  Now as for if this is actually the case is up for debate and will always be open to debate but the fact that the former speaker of the house and former Progressive Liberal Party (PLP) Member of Parliament for Garden Hills. Would actually thinks and believes persons were paid to say away from the polls is ludicrous and bordering on delusional.

So I ask Mr. Major to present his “credible evidence” because without it this just seems as a way for him to make himself relevant ahead of the 2022 General Elections.

If at some point in time you may have speculated that Philip ‘Brave’ Davis had no moral compass and was devoid of an actual soul, well speculate no more because Mr. Davis has proven your speculation to be fact.
He has proven this to be correct by showing that his empathy and compassion for those affected by the hurricane three weeks ago and especially toward those that have lost loves ones is about as authentic as his picture used on his campaign poster going into the last general election.

Except from this article; “Three weeks after Hurricane Dorian decimated Abaco and Grand Bahama Progressive Liberal Party (PLP) Leader Philip Brave Davis said yesterday the government could have done more to protect lives during storm.
At least 53 people have already been confirmed dead as a result of the storm, according to authorities.
During a press conference at the opposition leader’s office on Bay Street, Davis said, ‘That is the catastrophe here.’
‘We can replace infrastructure, the bricks, the mortars. We can rebuild but can’t bring back lives…The key in these matters, are the effort should be: ‘How do we save lives?”

One thing you must say, that since becoming the official opposition, the Progressive Liberal Party (PLP) has held more press conferences and has more to say than when they were the government of The Bahamas. This is not because they have anything new to say or anything of relevance to add to the progress of the country in anyway; it is just because now they seem determined on dividing the country in a time of great need, through the dissemination of false and deliberately confusing information.
To suggest that the present government did not do everything possible to evacuate the people in harm’s way in Abaco and Grand Bahama, not even directing them to nearby caves, is an irresponsible lie.
While the Hon. Philip ‘Brave’ Davis, leader of the opposition Progressive Liberal Party (PLP) feigns compassion and empathy, both of which he has already proven he is devoid of; he must realize that all measures were taken to save lives as Hurricane Dorian approached The Bahamas, despite the falsehoods he chooses to spread at this time.
And as he continues his divisive message, he must also realize that even as he attempts to ride on the back of those affected by this storm, to use their pain and misery to advance his quickly diminishing political career, many of these persons have already began to rebuild their lives – even if it means building around him.

I find it odd that if you want to know what’s going with the opposition Progressive Liberal Party (PLP) in the newspapers you will not find it on the front page anymore, is this because the leader of the opposition is becoming more and more irrelevant with each and every passing day?

“PLP might hold off on no confidence motion” – The Nassau Guardian

Excerpt from this article; “In the devastating wake of Hurricane Dorian, Progressive Liberal Party (PLP) leader Philip Brave Davis said yesterday the party is considering postponing its vote of no confidence in Prime Minister Dr. Hubert Minnis.

‘We’re considering postponing it because we still think the conduct of the prime minister in [misleading] Parliament was sufficiently egregious.’ Davis said.

He added, ‘The resolution is in draft but I do not know whether I want to –  with the country in the state it’s in  and the shock of it – I don’t want to appear divisive at this time.”

If the leader of the opposition says that he does not want “to appear to be too divisive at this time”, his he suggesting that at other times he has been unnecessarily or necessarily divisive in the past?

I would suggest that the opposition Progressive Liberal Party (PLP) continue to be who they are, a party with a divisive spirit because it is a part of their nature; just as failure is and to try and change this perception at this time would only to perpetrate a falsehood [lie] on the people whom they ask to listen to them and to take them seriously.

The leader of the opposition intimates that “Minnis is ‘very partisan’ in his handling of the aftermath of Dorian”, he goes on to suggest that he [Prime Minister Dr. Hubert Minnis] is “not involving the opposition in anything”, this has already proven to be untrue [a lie] as the prime minister and deputy leader of the opposition, Chester Cooper, have been seen combining efforts to bring relief to the people of the country.

So Mr. Davis, go ahead and hold your vote of no confidence because you have already proven yourself to be divisive. 

It is amazing that the leader of the opposition would attempt to ‘sell’ this message to the people at a time when the people, the government, the country and the international community have come together and have resolved to the commitment of the re-building/restoration Grand Bahama and Abaco and all others affected by Hurricane Dorian….all of this while the oppositions sleeps.

It would appear that the leader of the opposition, the Hon. Philip ‘Brave’ Davis, would do whatever it takes to be prime minister of the Commonwealth of The Bahamas, even if it means calling his very own political history into question and putting his political future at risk.

Excerpt from this article; “Progressive Liberal Party (PLP) Leader Philip Brave Davis said last night that the party’s parliamentary caucus intends to move a vote of no confidence against Prime Minister Dr. Hubert Minnis regarding the Town Centre Mall lease agreement.
Davis was speaking at the final night of the PLP’s convention at the Malia Nassau Beach resort.
‘A prime minister with a conscience would resign,’ Davis told supporters as he addressed the Town Center Mall lease agreement matter.
‘A prime minister who cared about trust and good governance would resign. None of us holding our breath, are we?’
‘So tonight, I want to announce that I will be working with our parliamentary group on a no confidence motion that we intend to introduced in the House of Assembly at the earliest opportunity.’
‘And what we are going to do requires members of the FNM (Free National Movement) to go on the record and vote.’
‘They are going to be forced to demonstrate whether they are….on the side of the Bahamian people.”

First let me point out that not to follow opposition in this foolish exercise does not prove that you do not care about the people, ask Mr. Davis himself about this.
Mr. Davis has set out to reform and rebrand the Progressive Liberal Party (PLP), trying to change the perception of the scandal-ridden party as being open, honest and democratic; despite the less than democratic convention it held just last week, which saw Mr. Davis returned as leader after the ‘recommendation’ that his position as leader not be challenged. Now Mr. Davis wishes to call into question the integrity of the members of parliament of the Free National Movement (FNM) with his no confidence motion, an idea actually pitched to him by the Democratic National Alliance (DNA), although he knows, as does everyone, that this motion is dead on arrival. The leader of the oppositions at this time only wishes to paint all who do not support this motion as co-conspirators of sorts that are complicit in various alleged malfeasances which he [Davis] and his party supporters would like to accuse the current prime minister of.
In my opinion, this would be a worthy strategy if it were not being put forth by a Davis led opposition.
First, just let me to say that the Progressive Liberal Party (PLP) cannot rebrand itself as a “new”, “democratic” and scandal free political organization with Philip ‘Brave’ Davis as leader, as he himself has to many questions to answer to even think about asking others questions.
He still needs to address the issue of the fire at BAMSI, where a case of the total lack of accountability led to the destruction of one of the government buildings and the subsequent revelation that the building did not have insurance; a requirement of any contractor even before they take control of the site; who was watching the gate?
Mr. Davis promised that ‘heads would roll’ because of this oversight and to date there has been no one held accountable and questions still linger even after much money was paid out.
The $6.5m contract for a new causeway at the Fishing Hole Road. A project that began under the former administration but completed under this government, which they claimed had been completed. There is the question, if it was completed under this government, where did that money go from original contract signed under the previous administration?
A capital project that passed though the minister’s office.
Then we have the Potter’s Cay development whose cost ran from $3.1m to $12m, without explanation and without being completed, another capital project with passed across the ministers desk.
I could go on but I think we all get the idea but just let me say that a person wishing to be prime minister would clear up these matters that cloud his image and the public perception of him.
The member of parliament for Cat Island, Rum Cay and San Salvador, wishes to call others to account but has shown that he is not willing to follow suit.
The leader of the opposition is showing that he wishes to be prime minister [KING] by holding others to account to standards which he himself is not willing to adhere to.

The member of parliament for Cat Island, San Salvador and Rum Cay will never be prime minister [KING] at this rate.

Senator Fred Mitchell, Chairman of the Progressive Liberal Party (PLP) continues to prove my assertion of just when you thought that you had reached the ground floor of stupidity/ignorance; there is indeed a basement.

Excerpt from this statement; “This morning’s National Review piece in the Nassau Guardian attacking the state of the internal democracy in the PLP has once again not met the test of journalistic standards. The first test to meet the standard of journalism is whether it is true or not.
The article this morning by Candia Dames, Managing Editor of the Nassau Guardian, is simply not true. It is based on a false premise and is adopting the propaganda of the Free National Movement.
Once you begin with a false premise, the entire article on which is based becomes a tissue of lies.
Philip Brave Davis, Leader of the PLP, has hosted three consecutive conventions in two years. To call him undemocratic is outrageous and untrue.”

To tell the God’s honest truth, Senator Fred Mitchell cracks me right up as he desperately looks for someone to blame for the public’s perception of the Progressive Liberal Party (PLP), as a less than honest political organization, as it now struggles to rebrand itself ahead of the 2022 general elections.
The chairman of the Progressive Liberal Party (PLP) boasts that Mr. Davis has hosted three consecutive conventions in two years and intimates that this magically makes the PLP a more democratic party but does not seem to appreciate that this does not negate the fact that the Progressive Liberal Party (PLP) has suppressed democracy within its very own walls for over nine consecutive years leading up to these three rushed conventions and seems to be on the very same track going into this convention, as the stalwarts and delegates are strongly recommended to not challenge the present leadership.
This is not Free National Movement (FNM) propaganda or anyone else propaganda but rather Progressive Liberal Party (PLP) reality.
During these nine years without a national convention, the PLP’s very own constitution calling for one every year, Mr. Davis, party leader and Senator Fred Mitchell, party chairman, sat quietly but only now seek to be looked upon as democratic as if their past deeds do not count.
The Chairman of the Progressive Liberal Party then goes on to make this very odd statement and does not seem to see the irony in it; “Once you begin with a false premise, the entire article; on which it is based becomes a tissue of lies.” But he must realize two things; one, the PLP’s entire campaign against the government to this point has for the most part been based on false premises and two, the PLP now attempts to build a viable and credible party on an unsound foundation [false premises] and wonders why it is not being received more favorably.
Is Senator/Chairman Mitchell suggesting that he and others were unable to do anything about their undemocratic way or even speak out about it?
Are the leader of the Opposition, Mr. Philip Brave Davis and the Chairman of the Opposition Senator Fred Mitchell suggesting that under the leadership of the Hon. Perry G. Christies they were forced into an undemocratic relationship and rendered powerless and voiceless?
By the way, there is a Progressive Liberal Party (PLP) constitution to be burnt, for those that have problems with constitutions and what they say.
The suggestion within itself is laughable and simply ludicrous and can only be put forth by persons who have NO respect for others and other person’s intelligence.

Excerpt from this article; “IN the face of Bahamas Power and Light’s continued instabilities, Opposition Leader Philip ‘Brave’ Davis on Friday criticized the Minnis administration’s decision to ‘go away from all’ the plans left in place by the Progressive Liberal Party.

Speaking on the issue on the sidelines of the swearing-in ceremony of Stephen Isaacs as the country’s newest Chief Justice, Mr. Davis insisted the government’s decision to gut critical units at BPL and ‘torch’ sustainability plans introduced by the Christie administration, a sled to ‘massive systematic failures.”

Exactly which plans left by the Progressive Liberal Party (PLP)?

There must come a time when the Leader of the Opposition must or should be prepared to tell the truth and shame the ‘devil’.

Facts are that Bahamas Power and Light (BPL) formerly The Bahamas Electrical Corporation (BEC) has been poorly maintained and managed under successive governments; this being both past Free National Movement (FNM) and Progressive Liberal Party (PLP) governments.  Due to this poor management and maintenance the demand for electricity has greatly outpaced the ability by the power company to supply it; this has lead to load shedding exercises over the past decades, with each year the situation only getting worst.  The reality at this present moment is that along  with the increased demand on the grid with additions of resorts such as Baha Mar and Albany there are two main generators offline due to certain ‘unfortunate mishaps’ at the plants.  At this time as BPL is attempting to rectify this situation, they are also attempting to keep up with the expected increased summer demand for power without two of its assets.

 So with that in mind, I would like to ask Mr. Davis; Leader of the Official Opposition Progressive Liberal Party (PLP), did the PLP’s plans include and provided for supplying power under these conditions – that is there were really plans at all in the first place.

What I honestly and truly find amazing, is that the opposition neglected their responsibilities in this regard but only now seek to condemn others that are actually working to resolve the very vexing problem; while they seen to concede to having only talked about it.  If there is an honest discussion to be had, we should bring to light the Progressive Liberal Party’s elimination on the payment of fuel surcharge on the cost of electricity that almost crippled the already financially strapped corporation and the corporations difficulties to recover from this decision by a past PLP government.

The Progressive Liberal Party’s (PLP’s) commentary on this matter has ALL been disingenuous, in light of the present conditions at BPL and in the manner in which they had handled the matter when the Leader of the Opposition was in charge of BPL formerly BEC under ‘better’ conditions.

So now they [the PLP] are asking for answers and I ask why weren’t their “wonderful” plans implemented during their administration, when the Leader of the Opposition was in control of the power company?

The Opposition should be ashamed of attempting to take advantage of this situation for political gain given the fact that they were unable to solve the county’s energy problems but we all know that they are not…..these men and women know no shame.

“PLP calls for public demonstrations over blackouts” – The Nassau Guardia

Excerpt from this article;”Progressive Liberal Party (PLP) Chairman Fred Mitchell yesterday said he is ‘embarrassed’ by repeated power outages across New Providence and called for public demonstrations to hold the government accountable on the matter.

‘The government must as early as tomorrow in the Senate make a public statement about why they can’t keep the power on,’ he said.

He added, ‘The FNM has failed us.  It is time for demonstrations to bring this government into account.  They must answer for their falsehoods and say what is happening,’

‘It is embarrassing today in a church service with the minister responsible for electricity present and the church was plunged into darkness,”

As the Chairman and Senator of the Progressive Liberal Party (PLP) seems so quick to put pen to paper, it would appear that he did so without any forethought or maybe he just hopes that the Bahamian public are not just forgetful but also dumb and ignorant.

First, Mr. Mitchell would make it appear as if the vexing problem of power outages due to load shedding by BPL, formerly BEC, has only just began under this Free National Movement (FNM) administration.  This seems to be his devious way of promoting what is tantamount to a lie.  The problem of blackouts due to load shedding has been a very vexing problem spanning decades and successive governments; even the last two Progressive Liberal Party (PLP) administrations of which Mr. Mitchell was a Cabinet Minister.  Doing both terms little to nothing was done to alleviate the problem, due to this fact he should be ashamed to even address this situation but it a desperate need to remain relevant by remaining in the news it would appear that Senator Mitchell does not care about  the role that he played in actually assisting this situation deteriorate to this present point.

My other point, which Mr. Mitchell fails to address as he gets up on his soap-box and advocates for “public demonstrations”, is that even as he thinks to put out this rubbish, the situation has been addressed and action has been taken to bring about the necessary relief to the problem – #notalkbutaction.

I am not pleased with the present situation and the blackouts, as I have said it is very vexing; but I am pleased that a plausible solution is being carried out; unlike the scandal ridden efforts of the Progressive Liberal Party (PLP).

“Davis: PLP would welcome McAlpine” – The Nassau Guardian
Excerpt from this article; “Following Pineridge MP Fredrick McAlpine’s scathing criticism of the government last week, Progressive Liberal Party (PLP) leader Philip Brave Davis yesterday hinted that his party would welcome him should he choose to leave the Free National Movement (FNM).
‘I don’t want to at this time comment on any views as to whether he should leave his party and join me or otherwise,’ Davis told The Guardian.
‘What I do know..politics is about numbers and every time we can add one, it means the other doesn’t get that one.’
During his contribution to the budget on Thursday, McAlpine said that the government claimed ‘it’s the people’s time’ but ‘only for a select few, a resurrected oligarchy, special interest and elitist with foreign interests.”

What I really feel is important for the Pine Ridge member of parliament at this time to decide is what is it that he really wants and exactly how he seeks to achieve it. He suggests that his motives are purely altruistic in nature and are driven by a genuine need/desire to help the people of The Bahamas at large but he does not really say how this should be achieved. It would seem that his only action to date has been to criticize the present government over its actions as they do what they feel what is best and/or necessary to achieve the goal of trying to help the people of The Bahamas; it’s first action being to strengthen the economy of the country – the foundation to growth.
Yes, he was voted in with a Free national Movement (FNM) party that was elected to do ‘something’ but now seems to stand with those that sing the chorus of “oh, not that/this!!!”
Another question which Mr. McAlpine should ask himself is, will the Progressive Liberal Party (PLP) as an organization and as a government, look out for the best interest of the country at large especially given their track record.
He should also bear in mind that as he wishes to hold the Free National Movement’s (FNM’s) government accountable for its campaign promises, he will also be expected to do so for the Progressive Liberal Party (PLP) if they were ever to become the government and as he is courted by their leader; the Hon. Philip ‘Brave’ Davis.
In the end, he must essentially figure out if he is ‘this’ or ‘that’ – ‘that’ being resistant to change and which is not ‘this’.

This is the second true Free National Movement (FNM) budget presented by the Minnis administration.  The very first budget being the result of the consequence of continuation of government, in that case a budget based on figures and projections put forth by the previous administration.  With this being said, it is amazing that the only major criticism to both FNM budgets has been the same; a complaint of being “uninspiring”

Excerpt from this article; “Progressive Liberal Party (PLP) Deputy Leader Chester Cooper lambasted the government’s ‘uninspiring, unimaginative’ budget communication, asserting that he doesn’t ‘believe the numbers ‘put forth by the minister of finance.

Last week, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance Peter Turnquest said despite raising the rate of value-added tax (VAT) by 60 percent last year, the government will fall short this fiscal nearly $240 million short of its projected revenue target for this fiscal year.

However, Cooper shot that down during a PLP town hall meeting on Monday night.

‘I don’t believe the numbers and I don’t believe the spin,’ Cooper said.

‘Spin, spin, spin.  That’s all what they master.  They said that the VAT increase would have yielded hundreds of millions more than it actually did.  Then they want to tell you that it’s not important if they don’t collect that money, that only the deficit matters.

Copper said the government was;’too competent’ to collect taxes during the 2018/2019 fiscal year.

He also called the 2019/2020 budget a ‘tragedy not comedy’.

‘Listen, this budget is not for the Bahamian people’, Cooper said.”

“Then they want to tell you that it’s not important if they don’t collect that money, that only the deficit matters.”, to my recollection this was never stated as fact or even suggestion in any way but then what are facts as the Progressive Liberal Party looks to score political points.

It would seem that Chester Cooper is asking the Bahamian people to accept Progressive Liberal Party (PLP) propaganda over fact and logic.  It is very disconcerting that he would label the current budget as “unimaginative and uninspiring”, as budgets are about informing the country about the country’s economy performance and future plans; imagination and the selling of dreams should play little to no role in this process, and is probably why the previous administration had so much trouble keeping the country’s finances in order – caught up in imaginations and day dreams.

Even more disconcerting is the statement that “…this budget is not for the Bahamian people”, because it is my understanding that an improved economy benefits the entire country and not just a few as Mr. Cooper would have you believe.

So, what this really comes down to is a case of Progressive Liberal Party propaganda over brains, you either take the facts as provided by the minister of finance, who has admitted to the short falls of the last budget, and come to a reasonable conclusion,  or you can have him lie to you  and put forth unmitigated propaganda,  as the Progressive Liberal Party (PLP) suggests that should be do, by being more “imaginative and inspiring”; while hiding the truth.

What is truly uninspiring is a lackluster opposition who only oppose to oppose, while presenting no factual evidence or reason to have persons to follow, beside blind partisanship
